Bet Starts NJ is now FOX Bet
Sportsbook Website Review
The Star Group, publically-listed Canadian-based international gaming giant that owns PokerStars and recently purchased Sky Betting, has joined the New Jersey sportsbook gold rush, bringing in from offshore a wealth of sports betting know-how and financial muscle.
This via its huge global PokerStars Empire and the already strongly established European-centered BetStars EU Sportsbook which is notably strong in Germany.
Says Matt Primeaux of The Star Group’s US SVP Strategy & Operations: “As one of the largest online gaming companies in the world with millions of customers, we have successfully launched BetStars in regulated markets across Europe.
“We look forward now to expanding and enhancing our New Jersey BetStars offering, including through leveraging our Sky Betting & Gaming acquisition following approval from the UK Competition and Markets Authority, to provide a premier product and experience to our customers in this new and developing market.”
In the recently-legalized New Jersey sports betting market it will operate as BetStarsNJ and thanks to its high-quality Star Group Proprietary Software, it has indeed been able to come in behind US-based Sports Fantasy juggernauts DraftKings and FanDuel and Casino-linked operators like SugarHouse and 888sports with a real ‘premier product’.
For one thing, it can rightly boast of having the biggest and most keenly-priced sportsbook of all of the eight which have so far gone live in New Jersey.
For another, it has launched itself with what to my mind is easily the most exciting and aggressive welcome bonus and promotion program in New Jersey so far.
All this and one or two other really good touches have clearly been designed to offset the huge advantage in market share DraftKings and FanDuel with their many millions of already-registered Fantasy Sports gamers, will have had to start with.
But let’s get a closer look at the nuts and bolts of the Star Groups New Jersey sportsbook.
If you go to www.betstarsnj.com, you will be taken to a website that, along with an exceptional FAQ menu and announcements about its unbeatable bonus and promotions program, will disclose key betting features and the fact that it is “comes from the creators of PokerStars, one of the world’s largest online gaming companies” (it has created 120 million accounts, has seen 41 million apps downloaded and made 414 millionaires”).
It will also tell you that you need to download either an iOS or Android mobile app to get your betting underway.
Having done this, you will be presented with a clean, business-like interface that, while not as attractive, perhaps, as some of its NJ rivals, is very easy to understand and just as easy to navigate, especially on your Smartphone.
Everything is laid out clearly for you to register, claim the $500 free welcome bonus when you pay your first deposit, sign-in, pick-your sport and type of bet you want to make and then get started – provided that you are 21 or older and within the borders of New Jersey.
Coming out of Europe as it has where sportsbook competition is intense and has been around since before the turn of the Century, its list of sports on which you can bet is far greater right now than any of its New Jersey rivals, even those of DraftKings, 888sports and Sugarhouse who are all using the internationally developed Kambi Sports software.
Apart from all the big US favourites like NFL and College Football, NBA, WNBA and College basketball, MBA baseball, NHL ice hockey, NASCAR racing, NCAA lacrosse, NCAA softball and eSports it also offers many international favorites like soccer, tennis, golf, boxing, F1 motor racing, cricket, rugby union, and cycling.
And that’s not where it ends. BetStarsNJ’s extensive menu also includes a list of lesser-known sports as long as your arm. Some you may never have heard of.
And this is just for starters.
Within each sport, there are also scores of different leagues like soccer’s famed UK Premier League, the star-studded Spanish La-Liga and the super-efficient German Bundesliga or individual championships like the US Tennis and Golf Opens.
On all these you can, in turn, place hundreds of different types of bets, amongst them spread bets, futures bets, over-and-under bets, prop bets, total bets, and Round Robin bets as well as a long list of different parlay bets.
If it’s instant excitement you want you can get involved with the action by making live, in-play bets on things like whether the baseball batter at the plate will strike out or make first base.
And then there is also the unique BetStars special feature brought over from Europe which gives you the chance of an ultra-large payday using a Spin &Win wheel that can multiply your winnings by up to 10 times
Another option you are given is the “Cash Out” feature which has recently become so fashionable in the sportsbook industry. It enables you to either cut your losses or gamble on your winnings being greater than they will be after the end result.
Bonuses and Promotions
With more experience in this important field, BetStars NJ is also using one-upmanship in their promotional activities as they seek to make an early impact in New Jersey sports betting.
Their $500 free bet welcome bonus equals that of 888sports which, until now, was the biggest in the NJ market – but it comes with less stringent conditions than 888’s and doesn’t fall away after 30 days if you haven’t made sufficient bets with it.
BetStars welcome bonus works this way. Place your first bet and get a matched Free Bet up to $500. Then, for every $150 you wager after that, you’ll get another $50 Free Bet up to $450 until you have wagered a total of $1,350 to redeem the full value of your bonus.
And there are more promotions; quite a bit more.
Apart from its already-mentioned Spin-and-Win feature that can multiply a winning bet 10 times, StarBets had a number of other attractive promotions at the time of this review. They included:
- ‘Stars Stack’ – You will be a winner if you chose two or more players in a selected NFL game and they all contribute to a touchdown, either by throwing, rushing, or receiving.
- NFL 2 Minute Drill – Place a ‘Money Line’ bet on any NFL game, and if your team is leading with two minutes left in the fourth quarter – and it goes on to lose, you get your bet refunded as a Free Bet of up to $20.
- Free Weekly Bet- bet $25 on anything from Monday to Sunday and get a $5 Free Bet every week of the year
Earlier when it first went live online, StarBets was running a promotion offering new punters 100/1 on any NFL team with a wager of up to $5.
Yes, that’s right, on ANY team! And yes, while 5$ is not a lot, it would have earned you $500 if you had won!
If you gamble on both the BetStars sportsbook and a PokerStars, another of the special features on offer is that you will be able to use the same wallet for both, either via Poker’s desktop cashier or the Sportsbook’s mobile app cashier.
And you will be able to do it with the utmost confidence, knowing that your personal details and financial transactions are safely secured by a large global institution which cannot afford to offer anything less.
Deposit options include using Visa or MasterCard credit cards, Instant eChecks, Neteller, Skrill, Online Banking, a PokerStars Play Card, or with cash at a PayNearMe 7/11 or at the Resort Casino Hotel’s Cashier Cage
You won’t be able to use your credit card or 7/11 to withdraw your winnings, but Instant eCheck, Neteller, Skrill, a PokerStars Play Card or a Resort Casino Hotel Cashier’s Cage will do just fine.
At the bottom of the home page on its website, BetStars offers some excellent customer help via an FAQ and an extensive list of getting-to-know facts about it and the sports betting business it is in.
You can also reach them on a ‘Contact Us’ feature which calls on you to fill in a form and ask a question and promises to get back to you with an answer as soon as possible, but that’s about as good as it gets.
There is no telephone or What’s App help and live chat is only available – and only on the Poker website – to a select few “at this time” (depending on prior real money deposit history, location, language preferences and settings”).
The words “At this time” clearly indicates that the missing Customer Support services are on the way, but right now, support is clearly not a BetStars forte.
And that’s a pity because it seems to have got so much else right for its launch.
With customer support being the lone exception, BetStarsNJ certainly seems to have come up with the kind of “premier product” that can give them a reason to hope that its attractions will get them noticed in the current New Jersey sportsbook melee.
With the best sports and promotions menus in the New Jersey market so far, a single wallet shared with its older PokerStars and casino siblings, it is very possible that it will attract many DraftKings and FanDuel Sports Fantasy diehards along with its own poker and casino gamers – even if only on a look-see basis to start with.
I would certainly recommend that you go and have a look-see for I am pretty certain you will like what they see.
