EX-NFL STAR GRONKOWSKI NOW A WWE CHAMPION

Former New England Patriots tight-end Rob Gronkowski is the latest WWE’s 24/7 wrestling champion.

The 30-year-old 3-time Super Bowl winner and NFL 4-time All PRO captured the title in his WWE debut at Wrestle Mania 36 on Sunday.

He beat long-time friend Mojo Rawley in one of the rare sporting events staged in the USA at the weekend. But for this, his first appearances on Smackdown, there were no fans to cheer him on.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fight was one of series that took place behind closed doors over the weekend. They were staged at the WWE’s performance centre in Orlando, Florida.

After he retired from football in 2018 it was announced that the 6ft. 6in., 268lb ‘Gronk’ had struck a deal with the WWE.

‘The Gronk’ wanted “one crazy match”

Subsequently he was reported to have said he was not really interested in becoming a professional wrestler. He would, however, like to participate in “one crazy match”.

Well this is exactly what he did on Sunday when he avenged an earlier setback that had upset him.

On Saturday, the WWE’s reigning 24/7 Champion R-Truth had been laid out by Gronkowski who then went for the pin. His big buddy Rawley was having nothing of it, though.

He jumped in, pushed Gronkowski off R-Truth and pinned the champion himself to snatch the belt. Rawley then called out Gronk, and disappeared.

The 24/7 Championship can be won at anywhere any time as long as a referee is present. And Gronkowski was well aware of it.

Ex-Patriots star hit back Sunday

He hit back on Sunday, just after Edge and Randy Orton’s epic Last Man Standing title match concluded.

This was when a crazy brawl spilled down from backstage to the ringside involving Rawley and several challengers for his belt.

Seeing his chance, Gronkowski leapt off his perch, took out all opposition and angrily pinned Rawley. Then, before anyone knew it, he was gone, safely taking away his new title.

Whether the Gronk walks away from the WWE or not now that he has had his “one crazy match’ is not clear. But then, very little is as the latest coronavirus continues raging across America.
